What is image conversion?
Image conversion changes how picture data is encoded so the file works better for a particular website, app, document, or workflow. Converting can add transparency support, improve compatibility, or reduce file size. Because each format has different strengths, the converted file may be smaller or larger than the original.
How to convert images online
- 1. Add a JPG, PNG, WebP, or browser-supported BMP image.
- 2. Choose JPG, PNG, or WebP and adjust quality or dimensions.
- 3. Convert, compare the result, and download the new file.
When to use each format
- • JPG for photographs and widely compatible small files
- • PNG for logos, screenshots, sharp graphics, and transparency
- • WebP for efficient modern web images and transparency
JPG vs PNG vs WebP
JPG
Uses adjustable lossy compression and is ideal for photographs. JPG cannot store transparent pixels.
PNG
Uses lossless compression and preserves transparency, sharp edges, and exact pixel colors.
WebP
Combines efficient compression with transparency support, making it a strong choice for modern websites.
Understanding transparency
PNG and WebP can keep transparent backgrounds. JPG cannot: when you convert a transparent image to JPG, Kivrum fills transparent areas with white so the result remains predictable and easy to use.
Private, local conversion
Your image is converted locally in your browser and is never uploaded. Canvas processing and downloads stay on your device; Kivrum does not use an external conversion service.

Image converter FAQ
Which image formats can I convert?
You can open JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, and BMP when your browser can decode it. Output formats are JPG, PNG, and WebP.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your image is converted locally in your browser and is never uploaded.
What happens to transparency when I choose JPG?
Because JPG has no transparency support, transparent areas are flattened onto a white background.
Which output format should I choose?
Use JPG for photographs, PNG for lossless graphics or transparency, and WebP for efficient web images with optional transparency.
Why is BMP support browser-dependent?
Canvas conversion begins with the browser’s built-in image decoder. Some browsers can open BMP files while others cannot decode every BMP variant.
Can conversion make a file larger?
Yes. Lossless PNG, higher quality, larger dimensions, or conversion from an efficient source can increase the file size.
